It is highly expressed on regenerated type II alveolar cells. Higher serum levels of KL-6 were found in patients with various respiratory diseases, including ILD-type idiopathic interstitial pneumonia, collagen-vascular disease-associated interstitial pneumonia, hypersensitivity pneumonia, sarcoidosis, lung cancer and tuberculosis. The presence and severity of pulmonary fibrosis is also associated with elevated serum levels of KL-6.
